On Wednesday, January 6, Ed Finney passed away at his home in East Schodack. As
many of you may know, Ed has been ill for the past 6 months. During this time, his wife
Sharon along with support from their children, Eddie and Jen, Sharon's brother Mike,
and many good friends have continued to collect and auction art and antiquities in the
professional manner we have grown to expect from Finney’s Auction Gallery.
Ed‘s involvement in antiques was a lifelong pursuit. Even as his health failed him, Ed’s
love and enthusiasm of collecting continued until the end. He assisted his loving wife and
partner, Sharon, in finding objects of interest and contributed to their Monday,
January 4th auction at Finney’s Auction Gallery via telephone.
Ed’s love of the antiques business was matched by his enjoyment of the people he met
and interacted with as part of this business. Ed lived life large –-he was often at the
center of an attentive audience--everyone that had the opportunity to meet Ed would
leave with a smile and a story to share.
Those of us who knew Ed remember the 3 things that defined his life—family, friends,
and generosity. His wife and partner, Sharon, shared his life and love of collectables.
Together since their teen age years, Ed and Sharon embodied a sense of devoted
companionship and family values rarely seen. Their children, Eddie Finney and Jen
Smith, along with their spouses, Karen Finney and Jason Smith continued to live in the
same community as Ed and Sharon. Eddie and Jen also contributed their time at the
Auction Gallery—Eddie as Auctioneer and Jen as their office manager. Most days,
Eddie, Jen, and their families enjoyed dinners and conversations with Ed and Sharon.
Eddie and Karen’s five year old son, Martin, was the light of Ed’s life. Martin and his
“Pop Pop” shared a special relationship; with Martin spending much of his time with Ed
and Sharon at the Auction Gallery. Ed was looking forward to the upcoming spring birth
of Eddie and Karen’s second son, Morgan.
As a friend, Ed was steadfast—always there no matter what the situation and willing to
help. Ed was continuously able to find the humor in life’s offerings and did not take the
small things too seriously.
Ed’s fairness and generosity was not limited to family and friends. In business, he
presented just offerings when buying and selling antiques to collectors and antiques
professionals.
Ed loved being with his family more than anything in this world. He loved to travel; Ed
especially enjoyed family trips to Cape May, NJ, Myrtle Beach, SC and Sacandaga Lake,
NY. On summer days, he found pleasure watching and playing the horses at Saratoga
Race Course. Although antiques were his business, Ed was also an avid personal collector
and especially loved collecting Disney memorabilia.
Survivors include his adoring wife, Sharon Finney; son, Everett M. (Eddie) Finney III
and his wife Karen of North Greenbush, NY; daughter, Jennifer Smith and her husband
Jason of East Greenbush, NY; sister, Beth Ste-Marie and her husband Ron of Inlet,
NY; mother-in-law, Dorothy Cramer of Albany, NY; brother-in-law, Mike Iwanos of
Albany, NY; and grandson, Martin E. Finney of North Greenbush, NY. Ed is also survived
by his niece, Nicole Jolley and nephew, Ron Ste-Marie Jr.
A celebration of Ed's life took place Monday, January 11 at the Franklin Terrace, 126
Campbell Avenue, Troy, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to
the Give Kids the World Village: 210 S. Baff Rd, Kissimmee, FL 34746 or at www.gktw.
